Hugh King

On 26 October 2018, Hugh King & Co (Holdings) Ltd became part of the Tillicoultry Quarries Group, bringing a whole range of new products and services to our team.

In contrast to the construction market, Hugh King & Co has established itself as one of the leading suppliers of sports sand, currently serving all the Open Championship Golf venues within Scotland, in addition to over a 100 regional courses. Hugh King & Co (Holdings) Ltd sand has also played a part over the years, in the construction of the pitches at Hampden, Celtic Park and Ibrox Stadium.

Supported by a dedicated staff of over 40 team members, all of the products are delivered using a versatile fleet of vehicles from Hullerhill Quarry, Kilwinning. Now with the support from the wider Tillicoultry Quarries Group, the company is ready for a new challenge in the growing UK market.

About Hugh King

Hugh King & Co was established in 1853 and operated from a small yard in Irvine harbour as a coal and sand merchant. Throughout the late 20th century, it supplied Scottish Foundries with moulding sand and Rockware Glass works with sand for the manufacture of green bottles. It later moved to the current site in Kilwinning in 1979, taking over the valuable silica sand deposits at Hullerhill and allowing the expansion of the business into new and emerging markets.

In 2004, a specialised dry mortar plant was built at Hullerhill with a capacity of 60 tonnes/per hour. Being located at the reserve of the white sand and with the brown sand quarries close by at Newhill and Garnock this allowed the company to enter into the market with a diverse wide range of products from masonry mortars to a range of decorative renders.

Through our specially designed on-site silos that are loaded at Hullerhill with a range of the pre-blended dry mortar products. These are then transported to site using a “placement” vehicle, which places the silo in the required position. Attached to the silo is a mixer, control panel, power and a water supply. This allows site operatives to control the water content to produce an easy to use, consistent mix. The silos are topped up as required using an internal fleet of Hugh King & Co specialised tankers.

In addition to the silo products, Hugh King & Co’s bagged portfolio has grown with the company through the years and now expanded to offering a range of specialised dry mortar products from; natural stone adhesives, concrete repair products, fairing coats, bedding mortars and fast setting post mixes. The second bagging system supplies general sand, aggregates, pre-coated chips and limestone chippings.

Processes

Specially designed site silos are loaded with ready mixed dry mortar and render products. These are then transported to site using a “placement” vehicle, which places the silo in the required position. Attached to the silo is a mixer, control panel, power and a water supply. This allows site operatives to produce a perfect and consistent mix of mortar or render. The silos are topped up as required using an internal fleet of Hugh King & Co vehicles.

In addition to silo products, Hugh King & Co manufacture a wide range of bagged renders and mortar products for general construction. This includes specialist adhesive repair mortars and concrete repair systems.

These are packaged through an automated filling system onto a robotic stacker and transferred to a rack storage system. These racks are capable of holding 500 tonnes of bagged product, ready for despatch across the UK. A second bagging system supplies the general building market with sands, aggregates and pre coated chips and limestone chippings for the Tillicoultry Quarries asphalt business.
